Full colour, root touch-ups and grey coverage: a practical guide
Full colour changes or refreshes your shade from root to ends; a root touch-up keeps regrowth and greys covered in between. Here is what helps clients in Richmond Hill choose the right colour, plan their visits and keep the result rich.
Permanent or demi-permanent?
Permanent colour can lift your natural shade slightly and deposit colour at the same time, and it is the type typically used for full grey coverage. Demi-permanent colour only deposits colour: it cannot make hair lighter, and it fades gradually over about 20 washes, which makes it a softer way to blend greys or refresh faded ends. Dermatologists advise staying within about three shades of your natural colour where possible, because bigger jumps lighter need stronger peroxide and cause more damage.
Prices and time in the chair
Full colour and a root touch-up are each booked for about 90 minutes; a toner or gloss takes about 35 minutes. Each includes a free consultation first, the blow-dry finish and your formula kept on file, so your next root touch-up can match what was used before. Length, thickness and the amount of grey change the final price, which Gilaneh confirms at your consultation.
How often to come back
After full colour, the next visit is a root touch-up, root colour only, usually every 8 to 10 weeks as the new growth comes in. When the air is dry, the American Academy of Dermatology suggests waiting at least that long between touch-ups, which is worth remembering through an Ontario winter. A root touch-up treats the new growth; Gilaneh decides at each visit whether the lengths need refreshing too.
Box dye or henna in your hair?
Tell Gilaneh about everything that has been on your hair in the past few years, including box dye and henna. Past colour affects what is possible, and sometimes a correction has to come first; our colour correction page explains how that works.
Allergy safety
Many permanent hair dyes contain PPD (paraphenylenediamine), a common allergen. The FDA advises a skin test before dyeing your hair every time, and the NHS advises testing at least 48 hours ahead, because a reaction can take up to 72 hours to appear. If you have ever reacted to hair dye or had a black henna tattoo, tell us before you book.
Keeping colour rich at home
- Use conditioner after every wash, and massage shampoo into the scalp rather than the lengths.
- Choose a gentle, colour-safe shampoo; many people with coloured hair go sulfate-free to be on the safe side.
- Keep heat tools on a low setting with a heat protectant, and dry by wrapping in a towel, not rubbing.
- Wear a hat in strong sun: UV can leave coloured hair dry, brittle and faded.

Full colour: frequently asked questions
How much does full hair colour cost?
At Superstar Hair Studio in Richmond Hill, the price of full colour or a root touch-up depends on length, thickness and how much grey there is to cover. Gilaneh confirms it at your free consultation.
How long does a colour appointment take?
Full colour and root touch-ups are each booked for about 90 minutes, including the blow-dry finish. A toner or gloss on its own takes about 35 minutes. Very long or thick hair can take longer.
How often should I touch up my roots?
After full colour, a root touch-up (root colour only) is usually due every 8 to 10 weeks. Dermatologists suggest not going sooner when the air is dry, as in winter. Your formula is kept on file so each touch-up matches.
Will full colour cover my grey hair?
Permanent colour is the type typically used for full grey coverage, while demi-permanent colour blends greys more softly and fades over about 20 washes. Gilaneh recommends the right option for your hair at the consultation.
Does hair colour damage hair?
Permanent colour uses peroxide, and the bigger the change, especially going lighter, the more stress on the hair; dermatologists suggest staying within about three shades of your natural colour. Conditioner after every wash, low heat and sun protection help coloured hair stay healthier. A bond treatment can also be added to your visit.
Do I need an allergy test before hair colour?
The FDA advises a skin allergy test before every hair-dye service, and the NHS recommends doing it at least 48 hours before. It matters most if you have reacted to hair dye before or had a black henna tattoo. Tell us when you book, and Gilaneh will confirm how it is handled at your consultation.
